A tribal group Again Blocks Highways In Manipur After 3-Day Ultimatum
Today, a tribal group in Manipur has reinstated an indefinite blockade on two critical national highways, pressing for an adequate supply of essential goods to the Kuki-Zo communities residing in the hill regions of the state.

The affected highways are NH 2, which connects Imphal to Dimapur in Nagaland, and NH 37, linking Imphal with Silchar in Assam. Both these highways play a crucial role in maintaining surface connectivity for Manipur with the rest of the country through Nagaland and Assam.

The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) had previously issued an ultimatum, warning that a blockade would be initiated in three days if the situation did not improve.

Lamminlun Singsit, the Secretary of COTU, stated, "Highway blockades will be reimposed on NH 2 (Imphal-Dimapur) and NH 37 (Imphal-Silchar) if the supply of essential commodities to the Kuki Zo communities in the hill areas of the state is not ensured."

According to officials, a substantial number of individuals in Kangpokpi district have enforced the blockade, obstructing the movement of vehicles carrying goods.

Additionally, another tribal organization, the Kuki Zo Defence Force, has issued a warning that it will initiate blockades from August 26 onwards if the supply of essential goods and medicines to Kuki Zo inhabited areas is not guaranteed.

NH 2 has already been blocked at least twice since the violence erupted in May. During a visit to Manipur in late May, Home Minister Amit Shah appealed to groups like CoTU to lift the blockade, and they complied.

The violence in Manipur initially flared up on May 3 following a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts, protesting against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Tragically, over 180 people have lost their lives, with more than 3,000 injured during the violence. Over 60,000 people are still displaced, and property worth thousands of crores has been destroyed.

In terms of demographics, Meiteis make up approximately 53 percent of Manipur's population and primarily inhabit the Imphal Valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, account for 40 percent and reside mainly in the hill districts.
